The Glassco Residency in Translation is where I learned to be a translator, thanks to the generous mentorship of Linda Gaboriau (and all the brain-expanding cultural conversations I’ve been having with my colleagues there ever since). It’s where I truly entered the powerful theatrical forcefield of Rébecca Déraspe, and also where we became friends. And it’s just across the St. Lawrence River from where Rébecca’s play Les glaces is largely set… in her hometown of Rivière-du-Loup. This Talisman Theatre commission will be my fifth time translating Rébecca’s work, and this new play is vintage Déraspe – funny, humane, taut, fearless – but this powerful examination of solidarity and consent also feels like something new. Like with every new play, her wings are getting bigger.
Can’t wait.
